Many small paintings

I tell my students that you can speed up learning to paint by doing many small paintings, especially if painted from life. It is easy to do; just grab something from the fridge or mantle, then put a strong light source on it and voila; a perfect still life reference.

If you work on one painting for 3 weeks compared to say starting and finishing 6 small paintings in the same amount of time it makes sense that by practicing composition, colour, and values you'll improve 6 times faster than working on a single piece.

I came across a blog by Jeff Mahorney’s
http://jmahorney.blogspot.com/p/all-paintings.html He has documented his progress in this pursuit. It’s fun to click on his first painting and then skip a head by 25 or 50 and you'll be amazed at how his ability improves. Pretty neat.
