Girl Reading Book

"Little Women"
16 x 20    oil   Sold

This painting was done using a photo reference that Kevin Bielfuss was kind enough to share at his recent workshop in Florida

We learned about the use of "fireflies" to move the viewer's attention around the painting..

Great picture. What do you mean about 'fireflies'. Are they those little nuggets of colour scattered about in the backgroud?

Hi Wendy - thanks for your comment. You are right. Kevin Beilfuss explained it like this....

When you are outside on a dark night in the summer little fireflies will catch you eye with flashes of light. In a painting he taught us to use bits of colour that catch your eye and lead the viewer around the painting.

If you look at the large version of Little Women you will see bits of red, green and blue on her arms, dress straps leading your eye. I also repeated the colour in the background to add interest and again keep the eye exploring.

I used the technique in ABC's as well.

Hope that it explains it a bit better.

Hi Donna, thanks for the description. I can really see what you mean and it is very affective. I notice on the dress it is more the green that moves you and then into the background it is the blue that takes over. Yet they are all present in each area. Lovely picture, no wonder it sold!
